Term still valid
The most favorable scenario. Renewal is requested within the term, with proof that the condition has been maintained. It is worth starting comfortably early, because foreign documents take weeks to apostille and translate.
Fixed-term residence has to be renewed before it expires. If your term has already passed, there are still routes open.
Residence permit renewal is the application that extends fixed-term residence in Brazil. It must be requested from the Polícia Federal (Federal Police) before the current term expires, showing that the condition behind the residence still holds. If the term has expired, Lei 13.445/2017 provides for regularization, generally with an administrative fine and without automatic deportation.
At renewal, the authority does not only assess whether your documents are in order. It assesses whether the condition that justified your residence still exists. A student who suspended the course, a worker who was dismissed or a couple who separated have a substantive problem, not a paperwork problem.
When the original condition has changed, the route is normally not to renew but to move to other legal grounds. Making that transition before the term expires is far simpler than making it afterwards.
What changes according to where you stand.

You lost your job, finished the course or the family relationship ended. Here the same grounds are not renewed: the question is which other legal grounds you can move to. Acting before the term expires preserves the continuity of your residence, which counts towards naturalization.
An irregular status does not mean the automatic loss of the right to stay. The law provides for regularization, normally with an administrative fine. The risk grows with time, because a prolonged irregular status narrows the alternatives and creates obstacles for work, banking and travel.
Any one of these items deserves analysis before the clock runs down.
Start organizing the documents at least three to six months ahead. Not because the filing itself is slow, but because foreign certificates have to be issued, apostilled and translated, and each of those stages depends on other people.
Staying beyond your term is, as a rule, an administrative offense subject to a fine, not a crime. The Migration Law favors regularization. Deportation is an exceptional measure, preceded by notice and a period to regularize. Even so, the more time passes, the narrower the options become.
Filing the application generally produces a receipt attesting that your situation is under examination, and that usually protects your rights during the period. The right document to show an employer depends on your case, and it is worth confirming before any hiring.
Long absences can affect residence and they interrupt the count of continuous time that matters for naturalization. If you plan to spend an extended period abroad, check the impact on your status first.
The rules cited on this page follow Lei 13.445/2017 (the Migration Law) and Decreto 9.199/2017. Requirements, deadlines and amounts may be changed by later regulations. Confirm the rule in force before making any decision.
